8 Perfect Hikes to Do When Visiting George

getting out and about is the best way to explore the magnificent mountains that frame this, one of South Africa’s oldest towns. Herold Wines

Herold Wines

The vineyards and cellar of Herold wines lies just beyond the top of the historic Montagu Pass which winds its way up the Outeniqua mountains above George. Wine is made and bottled on the farm and besides grapes, blueberries are also cultivated and there is a young beef herd. A walk through the vineyards to observe the men practising their vine management skills is fascinating followed by a cellar tour including wine tasting . Learn how Herold Wines are made then enjoy a light lunch or tea in the cellar lovingly prepared by Ingrid. Other activities available on the farm include swimming or paddling on the dam or river pool, bird watching or cycling on the farm roads. One can also find a special picnic spot alongside the mountain streams and there are many nature walks and hiking trails as well as the mini labyrinth above the underground bottle cellar. An hours drive from George, this is a perfect base from which to explore all the Garden Route and Klein Karoo have to offer. The farm is open to the public for tastings and cellar tours from 10am to 4pm, Monday to Saturday.

Outeniqua Hop Route represents George, Wilderness members to 80 Travel Agents

Outeniqua Hop Route

A networking day was held at Fancourt for over 80 travel agents and tour operators on Thursday 4th May, where Michael Cook and Martin Reimann from the OTA presented The Outeniqua Hop Route and all its members. For many of these travel agents, it was their first visit to George, although they send many tourists to the Garden Route, and were very interested in finding out more abut the city. They were impressed how much there is to do and how beautiful the beaches and area is. Hop Route went out of its way to showcase some of the great attractions, accommodation and restaurants that George and Wilderness have to offer. The delegation was taken to Redberry Farm for lunch where they tried the Maze and miniature train, they were then transported to the various Guesthouses and Hotels, for a quick change and off to 101 mead st. for a superb evening. Friday morning was an early start for Canoeing in Wilderness with Eden Adventures. All of these attractions and accommodation was kindly donated by the members. The travel agents then went onto Knysna they were hosted by Knysna Tourism. The success of this visit would not have been possible without the support of the Outeniqua Hop Route Members.
